classroom arrangement
Elements of my ideal classroom are student centered with a high amount of active participation. I feel that a U-Shaped class would best suite the class objective in the following ways:
Group Discussion
A U-Shaped class supports frequent whole-group conversations as students are all able to see each other and the teacher at the same time. No one is able to hide in the back of the class and avoid participation, so even the most introverted students can be drawn in.
Behavior Management
A U-Shaped desk arrangement promotes eye contact and unobstructed passage for teaching which can help improve classroom behavior. This arrangement helps the teacher keep an eye on everyone’s actions and quickly reach and resolve conflicts or discipline problems. As with classroom discussions, students do not feel hidden in this configuration, and that may encourage them to improve their behavior.
Hands-On Demonstrations
A U-Shaped desk configuration allows all students equal access to viewing demonstrations. Additionally, this configuration creates a natural stage for student performances and presentations throughout the school year.
Small Groups
A U-Shaped class provides an easy way for students to form small groups of 3 or 4 without interruptions related to rearranging desks or moving around the classroom. The configuration also provides ideal wall space behind the formed groups for presenting material and group activities. Additionally, nothing obstructs the teacher within the U to monitor group progress, collect papers or answer questions.
